Thiago Alcantara Called Rio Ferdinand To Arrange A Trade To Manchester United According To Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand has disclosed that Thiago Alcantara called him in 2013 in the hopes of arranging a trade to Manchester United for him.

The Spain midfielder was linked with a move to Old Trafford eight years ago, especially following a man-of-the-match performance in the U21 Euros final against Italy.

After Thiago scored a hat-trick in that game in Jerusalem, someone – thought to be United and Spain goalkeeper David de Gea – scrawled ‘See you in Manchester’ on Thiago’s match ball.

Rio Ferdinand has revealed that Thiago Alcantara (right) called him in 2013 to try to negotiate a move from Barcelona to Manchester United. The Spain midfielder had just delivered a man-of-the-match performance in the U21 Euros final, and United were keen to add young blood to an ageing side that had just won the league for a record 20th time in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in command.

Thiago had already gained Ferdinand’s attention in United’s 2-1 pre-season friendly win over Barcelona in Maryland in July 2011, when the Spain midfielder scored.

Two years later, de Gea acted as a go-between by handing his compatriot Ferdinand his phone number in order to discuss a transfer, but Ferdinand alleges the United management, which includes new manager David Moyes and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, decided against signing the Barca star.

Ferdinand and United, on the other hand, were celebrating a record 20th league title for the Red Devils. ‘Before Thiago left Barcelona, he contacted me,’ Ferdinand said on his YouTube show Vibe with FIVE.

‘We played Barcelona on tour in the United States, and he was incredible.’

He was the tenth player on the field, and he scored a worldie.

‘But we knew about him anyway, and Moyes was manager a few years after.’

‘I don’t speak to Thiago, I don’t know him,’ the 42-year-old continued, ‘but David De Gea gave him my phone.’

‘He called me and said, ‘Rio, I’d like to come to Man Utd.’

Is there someone I can communicate with, or anyone you can speak with on my behalf, to gauge interest?

”Thiago (right) caught the eye in a pre-season friendly versus United in 2011, and David de Gea (left) gave him Ferdinand’s number two years later.

‘No, we’re already down the line with a number of other acquisitions,’ Ferdinand was told by the duo after mentioning it.

It’s OK.’ United were not the only team interested in the then 23-year-old, with Bayern Munich planning a reunion with former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola.

And Ferdinand believes that Thiago – who claimed in 2018 that he left Barcelona in pursuit of regular play – was given just one day by the Bundesliga giants to select his next move, with the Allianz Arena being his final destination.

However, according to Ferdinand, new manager David Moyes (right) and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward (left) decided against the move, and Thiago ended up reuniting with his previous manager, Pep Guardiola, at Bayern Munich. ‘He was given 24 hours, Thiago, to make a decision,’ Ferdinand added.

‘He called me the next morning, saying, ‘I’ve slept on it, can you tell me about Man United, what’s going on?’

”I have 24 hours to make a decision, or Pep will not take me to Bayern Munich,” he added again.

Thiago would go on to make 235 games for Bayern Munich, winning seven Bundesliga crowns and a Champions League triumph before joining United’s archrivals Liverpool last summer.

United’s business in 2013 turned out to be a fiasco, with the exception of signing Everton’s Marouane Fellaini, which was completed on deadline day.

Thiago would go on to win seven Bundesliga titles and a Champions League trophy with Bayern. Meanwhile, the Red Devils were unsuccessful in their pursuit of Thiago, his fellow Spaniard Cesc Fabregas, and Gareth Bale prior to his PS86 million move to Real Madrid later that summer.

They also struggled to sign a left-back, with Everton refusing to trade Leighton Baines and Real Madrid blocking a last-minute deal for Fabio Coentrao.

The effort to get Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera was also a farce, with sources in Spain revealing that United made a last-ditch PS34 million deal for Sami Khedira, while Sportsmail understands that United passed down the chance to sign Mesut Ozil, who went on to join Arsenal.
