Thibaut Courtois Saves Anthony Martial After Being Asked If He Is A Star Player By Manchester United

As his Belgium team-mate Jan Vertonghen hailed Anthony Martial as a’star player,’ Thibaut Courtois brutally questioned whether the Manchester United and France striker is one.

In a self-conducted interview on Pickx Sports, the Real Madrid goalkeeper and former Tottenham centre-back were asked to select the top talents that will miss out on Euro 2020.

Courtois, 29, could only name Sergio Ramos, a former club teammate who was left out of Luis Enrique’s Spain squad following a season marred by injuries and coronavirus.

The 34-year-old then named a number of players, including Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid, Marc-Andre ter Stegen of Barcelona, Miralem Pjanic of Barcelona, and Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool and Holland.

Four forwards were also identified by the Benfica defender: Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, Everton’s Moise Kean, former Manchester City attacker Edin Dzeko, and Manchester United’s Anthony Martial.

For the question, Courtois could only mention his former Real Madrid teammate Sergio Ramos, who he then violently interrupted, saying, ‘Martial?’

Is he a standout performer?

‘The Belgium duo chuckled to themselves as Courtois shrugged his shoulders once more, as though they were making fun of the 25-year-old United striker.’

Since his PS36 million move from Monaco over six years ago, Martial’s stint at Old Trafford has been marred by inconsistency.

Last season, the Frenchman scored just four Premier League goals and seven in all competitions for United before his season was cut short due to a ruptured knee ligament sustained while on international duty in March.

Vertonghen also named Norway attacker Erling Haaland (L) and Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk (R). He will face stiffer competition for a starting spot in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s forward line next season, with Jadon Sancho due to join after England’s Euro 2020 final against Italy on Sunday, following a PS73 million agreement with Borussia Dortmund.

Meanwhile, Vertonghen and Courtois represented Belgium at Euro 2020, but they were unable to repeat their 2018 World Cup semi-final performance.

The Red Devils were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Roberto Mancini’s side in Munich, with Romelu Lukaku’s penalty failing to reverse goals from Nicolo Barella and Lorenzo Insigne, who had put the Azzurri ahead.
