Portsmouth Have Launched An Emergency Investigation Into Allegations Of Racist Messages In The U18 Group Chat

The alleged racist words were extensively distributed on social media on Wednesday, and are likely to have referred to Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho, who the missed penalties in England’s Euro 2020 final loss to Italy. Portsmouth has opened an investigation into all alleged racist messages in a group chat involving players from its U18 side.

On Wednesday morning, screenshots purported to be from the chat following England’s penalty shootout loss to Italy in the Euro 2020 final were extensively distributed on social media, and the League One team is currently investigating the situation.

“Portsmouth Football Club are aware of photos appearing on social media that reportedly originate from an academy u18 group conversation and are discriminatory in character,” the club said in a statement.

“The club has initiated an immediate inquiry and will offer an update as soon as it is concluded,” says the statement.

“Portsmouth Football Club strongly opposes racism and is dedicated to the abolition of all forms of discrimination.”

Following Sunday’s setback, Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, and Javier Sancho were subjected to racist abuse on public social media channels.

The Football Association has condemned the abuse and stated that it will do all possible to assist the players involved.
