Manchester United Are Closing In On A Double Swoop For Raphael Varane And Kieran Trippier

Manchester United are allegedly close to completing a surprise double swoop for Raphael Varane and Kieran Trippier to bolster their defence.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has identified his back four as the weakest section of his side, but in Real Madrid centre-back Varane, he may have finally found his ideal defensive partner for Harry Maguire.

Trippier, England’s Euro 2020 hero, is also poised to arrive from Atletico Madrid, with the pair costing the Red Devils approximately PS68 million, according to the Sun.

Raphael Varane (left) and Kieran Trippier (right) are apparently on their way to Manchester United. The PS68million deal would see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer improve his United defence. Varane is anticipated to make up PS50million of the cost as he enters the final year of his Real contract, with the club keen not to lose him on a free transfer following the departure of his centre-back partner Sergio Ramos.

Ramos had been a key member of the Madrid team since 2005, but once his contract expired, he was permitted to join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

United’s personal terms with Varane are reportedly ‘all but agreed,’ with the club ‘hoping’ to conclude a deal for the 28-year-old by the end of next week, according to the Express.

Varane would play in central defence alongside England international Harry Maguire. If the transactions go through, United’s summer spending will have surpassed PS140 million, pending the projected PS73 million arrival of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund. It will be a long-awaited transfer at Old Trafford, with Sir Alex Ferguson having sought to sign the France star ten years ago before Real Madrid pipped him to the post.

Trippier is also keen to return to Old Trafford after two excellent years at the Wanda Metropolitano, where he won LaLiga with Atletico Madrid this summer.

The former Tottenham right-back is fighting for a return to the Premier League, and the 30-year-old’s ability to play left-back as well as wing-back provides Solskjaer a lot of choices.

With Trippier’s arrival, Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s future at right-back could be in jeopardy. His ball distribution and cross-defending have made him a possible weak link.

Trippier would join United after winning the LaLiga title with Atletico Madrid. Nevertheless, Solskjaer wants to see if Wan-Bissaka can play in a back-three and more central role.

If both deals go through, United would have spent well over PS140 million this summer, awaiting the likely signing of Jadon Sancho, as they attempt to build on their runners-up position to Manchester City last season and begin a title campaign this season.

Trippier’s international team-mate is due to be declared as a United player in the coming days after agreeing to a five-year contract with the club. The PS73 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund is expected to be revealed following a physical.

But, he might displace Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who could be shifted to a central role in a back three. However, rumors claim that Atletico Madrid is ready to join the race to sign Jesse Lingard if United decide to sell him this summer.

After a successful loan spell at West Ham last season, the 28-year-old has returned to Old Trafford for pre-season training amid uncertainties about his future.

Lingard is still a target for West Ham, with the England international looking for regular playing time.
