After A Response From Tottenham Fans Gennaro Gattuso Claims The Failed Appointment Hurts More Than Any Defeat

After failing to defend himself against a ferocious social media response, Gennaro Gattuso insists that his failed appointment at Tottenham Hotspur ‘hurts more than any defeat.’
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy pulled the plug despite a social media campaign against the appointment by Spurs fans. The former AC Milan midfielder became the surprise favourite to become the new Spurs manager after abandoning his employment at Fiorentina just 23 days into the job.
After disturbing historic comments made by Gattuso on women in football, same-sex marriage, and racism were brought to light on social media, the word ‘No to Gattuso’ began trending on Twitter.
While the 43-year-old stated he had no regrets about departing owing to disagreements over the club’s transfer tactics, he felt the Tottenham snub hurt a little bit more.
‘I don’t even want to talk about it,’ the 43-year-old told Il Messaggero when questioned about his departure from Fiorentina.
It’s pointless to offer further specifics because I’ve already forgotten that story, but I can’t do the same with the other one.’ The ‘other one,’ Guttuso refers to, is the now-discredited prospect of taking over at Tottenham, after he revealed his inability to defend himself against a deluge of online abuse and the impact it had on him and his family.
‘It was a great letdown, but I wasn’t described as I am, and there was nothing I could do about it.’
I apologize for not being able to defend myself and clarify that I am not the guy they were referring to in England,’ Gattuso continued.
‘At a time when we don’t want to grasp how harmful the internet can be, I had to accept a story that hurts more than any defeat or dismissal.’
‘Some animosity emanates from Facebook or Twitter, where any misinformation can get traction.’
I don’t have, and don’t want, any social media profiles, and neither does [my wife] Monica.
‘Why should I allow people to make fun of me for no reason?’
I don’t even have an Instagram account.
I don’t see why, if I drink a bottle of wine, I should take a picture to show others?
After weeks of unsuccessful hires such as Antonio Conte, Paulo Foncesca, and Brendan Rodgers, Tottenham have finally found their man in the form of Nuno Espirito Santo, the former Wolves manager.
Once former Roma manager Foncesca’s hiring fell through, Gattuso emerged as the surprise favorite for the post after becoming suddenly available and had brief conversations with the club’s officials.
Spurs, however, pulled the plug on the deal within 24 hours when the North London club’s supporters expressed their displeasure on social media.
One fan tweeted, “Gennaro Gattuso is now the number one target for manager.”
‘The same Gennaro Gattuso who just left Fiorentina after 22 days due to conflicts between him, Jorge Mendes, and the board over transfer strategy.’
‘Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur football club.’ Paulo Fonseca had been tipped to take over, but talks between the two sides fell through. Another said: ‘Gattuso is as defensive as they come, he doesn’t fit in any shape or form, and has just left a job after 22 days due to transfer policy.’
‘It’s the most ludicrous and inept appointment possible, so of course it’ll happen,’ said the former Italy midfielder, who also had a legendary touchline brawl with then-Spurs coach Joe Jordan during a Champions League match against AC Milan in 2011.
