The Us Has Sent A Detainee From Guantanamo Bay To Morocco Where He Was Born

The Department of Defense said Monday that a Moroccan man incarcerated in Guantanamo Bay for nearly 20 years has been moved from the American detention center to his native nation of Morocco, in what is thought to be the first detainee transfer in the Biden administration.
In 2016, a review board “found that Abdul Latif Nasir’s law of war detention no longer remained essential to defend against a continuing major threat to the United States’ national security” and recommended that Nasir be released to his homeland.
The Obama administration started the process of repatriating him, but it was halted by the Trump administration.
In Guantanamo Bay, there are currently 39 inmates.
“The United States salutes Morocco’s long-standing partnership in safeguarding both countries’ national security interests.”
The US is also grateful for the Kingdom’s willingness to support continued US efforts.
“Efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Prison,” according to the statement.
The Biden administration said in February that it plans to dismantle the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, which opened in 2002.
The facility was supposed to be a site where terror suspects might be interrogated.
Nonetheless, detainees have been held long, many without accusation or trial, and have been subjected to brutality.
The prison facility became an international icon of US rights abuses in the post-9/11 era as the US war on terror continued on.
Former President Barack Obama promised during his campaign in 2008 that the facility would be closed before the end of his presidency, however this pledge was never fulfilled.
In 2018, former President Donald Trump signed an executive order ensuring the facility’s continued operation.
