Shakira Will Be Tried In Spain For Tax Evasion According To A Judge

Shakira could face charges in Spain for allegedly evading tax of PS13 million.
Prosecutors in Spain have charged the 44-year-old Colombian singer with six offenses, all of which could result in jail time if she is found guilty.
They claim that in the years 2012, 2013, and 2014, the Hips Don’t Lie singer failed to pay taxes in Spain.
Shakira previously stated that she lived in the Bahamas during that time and was not a Spanish resident, only visiting the country “sporadically.”
According to Euro Weekly, a judge has decided that there are’sufficient indicators’ for Shakira to go to trial for allegedly dodging the payment of 14.5 million euros.
Shakira is expected to file an appeal with the Barcelona Court of Appeal against the ruling.
After being questioned by a Spanish judge, the musician has previously stated that she is not guilty of tax evasion.
At an hour-and-a-half hearing in Esplugues de Llobregat, near Barcelona, she rejected claims of not paying taxes while living in Spain between 2011 and 2014.
Authorities said that despite having lived in Spain for four years prior to 2014, the superstar failed to pay taxes.
Despite the fact that she allegedly went to Spain in 2011 when her relationship with footballer Gerard Pique became known, prosecutors believe she kept her formal tax residency in the Bahamas until 2015, when she began paying taxes in Spain.
Because the statute of limitations for prosecuting alleged tax offenses in 2011 has expired, the case only covers the years 2012 to 2014.
Shakira and the other defendants intend to appeal the ruling to the Barcelona Court, according to reports. Shakira’s press staff had earlier made a statement claiming the Colombian Superstar was innocent and that all tax claims had been paid.
‘At this time, there is no debt,’ it stated.
Her defense team maintained that she made the majority of her money on international tours and did not spend more than six months a year in Spain until 2014, making her a non-resident under Spanish tax rules.
‘Shakira has always met her tax obligations in all those countries in which she has worked, including in the time between 2011 and 2014,’ according to the statement. ‘She followed the opinions and precise suggestions of her advisers, who are top-level professionals from one of the world’s largest organizations.’
