As Travel Restrictions Were Lifted Concerns Were Raised About The Possibility Of A New Covid Version

According to Labour, Boris Johnson risks allowing a new Covid version to “run rampant” across the country by loosening travel restrictions for EU and US citizens.
Visitors from the United States and the European Union who are completely vaccinated against the coronavirus will be allowed to enter England without being quarantined.
The new rules will take effect at 4 a.m. on Monday, with Transport Minister Grant Shapps hoping that the US will become more lenient in enabling Britain to visit “on time.”
However, following a positive few days in which the number of Covid-19 cases in the UK dropped from over 50,000 on July 17 to 27,734 by 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Labour issued a warning about the impact of the travel rules.
“The Government’s track record on our borders has been one of recklessness and confusion,” said Shadow Transport Secretary Jim McMahon.
“They risk continuing this by announcing policy changes that apply just to England, without the scientific facts and criteria we need to ensure that another Johnson variant does not spread across the country and undermine the British public’s efforts.”
“We want international travel to be opened up in a secure manner.”
“Ministers need to be clear on what progress has been made on obtaining reciprocal agreements for British traveling overseas – particularly regarding the NHS app being recognised as confirmation of Covid status,” says shadow transport secretary Jim McMahon (Jacob King/PA) / PA Archive.
“We also need a clear green and red list, as well as country-by-country data to back it up,” the Scottish Government said. Starting Monday, fully vaccinated EU and US visitors to Scotland will be subject to the new rules.
The Welsh Government said it “regrets” the decision to abolish the quarantine requirement un England, but that having different laws for Wales would be “ineffective.”
At the powersharing executive meeting on Thursday, Northern Ireland’s ministers will decide their position on the accusation.
Except for those returning from France, only visitors who have taken two doses of a vaccine in the UK are permitted to enter from an amber country – such as the US and most of the EU – without self-isolating for ten days.
Professor Christina Pagel, director of UCL’s clinical operational research section, expressed concern about variations that are better at infecting those who have already been vaccinated, despite the fact that those who have been fully vaccinated can still get and spread the virus.
She told the Guardian that if travel between those countries and the UK was less restricted, a “worrying new variety” may emerge in the US or Europe, or “a variant that emerges anywhere will spread everywhere.”
Mr Shapps praised the policy change, saying, “Whether you’re a family reuniting for the first time since the pandemic began or a firm benefiting from improved commerce, this is something we can all enjoy.” When asked if he was convinced that the US and Europe would reciprocate by allowing fully vaccinated visitors from England to travel without having to quarantine, Mr Shapps stated, “I’ve just spoken to a number of people who are confident.”
“So we’re saying, ‘You can come here, you can come visit, you can come see friends, you can come as a tourist if you’ve been double vaccinated and follow the guidelines.’
