While Mbappe matched Cavani’s feat at PSG, Ancelotti joined Ferguson in an exclusive club on UEFA Champions League matchday 2.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) defeated Maccabi Haifa in the group stage phase of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) season 2022-2023 on Thursday, thanks to goals from Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe. On matchday 2 of the Champions League, Messi overtook his Ballon d’Or rival Cristiano Ronaldo by scoring the equalizer for the Ligue 1 giants. The former FC Barcelona captain also set a new Champions League goal-scoring record with his 126th strike. PSG’s 3-1 win over Maccabi Haifa was also the first time Messi, Neymar, and Mbappe all scored in a Champions League match for the Ligue 1 giants. Mbappe, PSG’s star striker, matched Edinson Cavani’s goal tally for the Ligue 1 club in the celebrated tournament. Mbappe and Cavani have both scored 30 goals for PSG in the Champions League. PSG, led by Mbappe, also tied Real Madrid’s record of scoring goals in 40 consecutive group stage matches. Between 2008 and 2015, the La Liga giants accomplished the same feat.

Real Madrid extended their winning streak against German clubs to 13 games after knocking PSG out of the Champions League last season. Los Blancos extended their unbeaten streak against German clubs to seven games with a 2-0 victory over RB Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabeu on Thursday. Carlo Ancelotti, manager of Real Madrid, also slammed a one-of-a-kind century in the Champions League. The veteran Italian manager is only the second head coach in Champions League history to have 100 victories. Alex Ferguson of Manchester United was the first manager in European tournament history to achieve 100 victories.

Haaland has already surpassed Crespo and Van Persie.

On a night when Messi wrote Champions League history, Manchester City forward Erling Haaland surpassed some of the best club goal scorers in Europe’s biggest tournament. The Manchester City forward scored the game-winning goal against his former club Borussia Dortmund at Etihad Stadium. Haaland has surpassed Robin van Persie and Hernán Crespo in the list of all-time leading goal scorers with his 26th goal in his 22nd Champions League appearance. Persie and Crespo each had 25 goals in their Champions League careers. Juventus set an unfavorable record. On Thursday, Massimiliano Allegri’s Juventus were defeated 2-1 by Benfica in the Champions League. Juventus set a dubious record by losing consecutive games for the first time in a European Cup or Champions League campaign. While PSG and Benfica are tied on six points, the Serie A club is third in Group H after a two-game losing streak.
